Check back often to see what we are learning in Preschool!
Take a look at what Ms. Connor did this summer!
September 5, 2018
Welcome to Preschool! Today was our first day of a new school year and we had a lot of fun together! We began our day by signing in! Each child and teacher has a flamingo with their name written on it. Once you arrive at school, each person moves their flamingo from the "not here" portion of the board, to "here"!
We had our first Music class today! Preschool and the Young Kindergarten class met together to explore the music classroom, get to know each other's names and play a few instruments! Every Monday and Wednesday we will have Music. On Tuesdays and Thursday we will have Gym. Each of these classes we will have with Young Kindergarten. This will give us a chance to make even more new friends! On Fridays, we have Library with just our Preschool class.
After a busy outside play time, we came inside for our story time. On the very first day of Preschool, it was fun to read a book about a mouse's first day of school! After climbing into a backpack, a mouse traveled to school to play with blocks, paint, have snack and make new friends! Many Preschoolers noticed that the mouse had done many of the things they had done in school! We all had a great first day and look forward to many more!

Two friends discovered our Looking Shelf! This space in the classroom is used to collect interesting artifacts the children (or teachers) find. Complete with two magnifying glasses, Preschoolers can touch, smell and look closely at what is inside. One Preschooler heard the ocean in a shell she put up to her ear!

Before morning snack, we visited the Early Childhood garden! Preschoolers trekked through trees, dirt, hills and rocks to see which vegetables and flowers had grown over the summer. A few Preschool friends who were in Nursery last year, remembered planting the seeds that became these plants. We spent some time picking tomatoes and green and purple beans, and then we brought them inside for snack!

September 7, 2018
Today we visited the library! After hearing a poem as we walked from our classroom to the library, Ms. Martindale read our class a story! Once the story was finished, each Preschooler had a chance to choose a book and sign it out. Preschoolers loved using the date stamp on their book. Each Friday we can return the book we took out, and check out a new one!

After Library class, we had Ticket Time! Every center in the classroom has a certain number of "tickets" that tell Preschoolers how many children can be in that center at one time. After choosing a ticket, Preschoolers can play in that center for as long as they like. Once they are done playing, they clean up and make another choice! Some centers are so popular, we have had to create a list to keep track of who would like to play there!

We celebrated our first birthday of the school year! A Preschooler and her mom made delicious chocolate chip cookies to share with the class. Every child is invited to bring in a special treat on their birthday. If your birthday is in the summer time, we celebrate with an ice cream party at the end of the school year!

September 11, 2018
Morning Circle is the time of day where Preschoolers and their teachers gather together and discuss the plan for the day ahead. Each morning, we sing our Preschool welcome song, name a leader for the day and share a thought or story or pass our turn. This together time sets the pace for the day, reminds the children of their daily schedule and gives Preschoolers a chance to speak in front of the group.

Table Toy/small group learning time, is the portion of the day where Preschoolers will learn and identify letter names, begin counting with one to one correspondence, sort by multiple properties, create patterns and many other skills. While the children are still getting used to their school routine, this time is being used to work with one or two friends on cooperative play. Using an assortment of manipulatives, each child is beginning to see the many different ways toys can be used and strategies for working with a friend.

September 12, 2018
The Art table is a busy place! This week we introduced glue, glue sticks and a variety of beads, gems, stickers and pom poms to the center! Four friends at a time can color, cut or glue as many pictures as they like. When they are done, they can place their work on the drying rack or on their art shelf to take home.

Today we played hand drums in Music class! After settling into our spots on the rug, each child was given a hand drum to tap, pat and drum out rhythms. After our drumming session, Preschoolers and their Young Kindergarten friends, heard a familiar story Brown Bear, Brown Bear , What Do You See? sung by their music teacher. We love our time in the music studio!

We spent a little time in the IDEA Lab today. Even though our science teacher was not in school, we had a chance to explore the lab. After hearing a story about friendship, Preschoolers had a chance to build with the Big Blue Blocks! These foam blocks come in many different shapes and sizes and were used to make car washes, machines, car tracks and anything else the class could create. We will visit the lab every Wednesday to explore nature based science and engineering.

September 13, 2018
Preschoolers work very hard while in school! After planning and putting so much thought and effort into building with legos, magna tiles, bristle blocks and various toys, it is frustrating to have to take it all apart and put it away. With the use of our "saving shelves", Preschoolers can save their structures for the week and continue to add to what they have made!

There are many times throughout the day when Preschoolers hear books read aloud to them. After outside play in the morning, we read books about the theme or unit we are studying. This week, we have read about friendship. Our second reading time happens after rest time in the afternoon. At any time in between, Preschoolers find time to look at books on their own or with a teacher. Some times those books are so relaxing, they make us sleepy!

September 18, 2018
Today was school picture day! After Morning Circle, Preschoolers and their teachers walked down to the theatre to have their photos taken! Each child had an individual photo taken and then we took a class photo. Photos will be handed out in November and families can decide if they would like a re-take done.

During today's small group learning time, we had our first Table Drawing session. Each Preschooler has their own set of markers, folder and paper to create a masterpiece! Every week, children will write their names, draw a picture of their choosing, date stamp their picture and then have a teacher write words to describe their picture. The picture is then placed in their Table Drawing folder. The folders stay in the classroom until the last week of school in June.

September 21, 2018
Arrival is an important start to the day for Preschoolers and their families. Parents can catch up with each other and talk to teachers, and children can settle into their school day. Each child moves their flamingo from "not here" to "here" to show they are in school. As children are leaving for the day, some prefer to sign themselves out by moving their name from "here" to "not here".

Preschoolers worked on a surprise for their parents! Next Wednesday night, families will be visiting the classroom to see a slideshow about what their children do in school. As a welcome to the classroom, each Preschooler made something special for their parents. Overview Night begins at 6:30 and families will receive their surprise that night. See you there!

September 24, 2018
The clay table has a new set of tools! A set of yellow number stampers has been added to help Preschool children identify their numbers. Each stamper has a number written on its base and the shape of the number carved into the bottom. Children can then press a variety of numbers into the clay!

In today's music class, Preschoolers played drums, listened to a story and danced! While their teacher sang, each verse included a different body movement the children could try out. One verse involved crawling on the floor, one involved walking in a circle and one even included pretending to take a nap! So much fun!

September 25, 2018
Breakfast while building! Some Preschoolers enjoy having a bit more to eat before they start their busy day at school. This Preschooler created a home for his dinosaurs while he finished his breakfast. Preschoolers have two snacks and lunch while at school, but their growing bodies need fuel at other times too!

In today's gym class, Preschoolers and Young Kindergarten friends played partner crazy cones. While one group of children hopped, skipped or galloped to turn cones over or right side up, the other group moved to turn the cones in the opposite direction. Although this was quite fun, the highlight of the class was when everyone played "What Time is it Mr. Fox", and got chased by the teacher!

This week, cars were introduced in the Block Area! With such a large space for building and creating structures, teachers thought it would be fun to add cars to the mix! Each child who plays in the center can use two cars at a time and swap them out for others as many times as they would like. This group of friends spent time building tracks their cars could drive on and towers their cars could rest on.

September 27, 2018
Last night, Preschooler's families visited the classroom to see what their children do in school each day. This morning, when Preschoolers came to school, they had a chance to see the slideshow and pictures their parents saw the night before! Thank you to every family who was able to attend.

Today was a partner play day during small group learning time. This pair of friends built structures the colored bears could stand on. While children were busy working, their teacher was "interviewing" each child on their favorite foods, what they would like to be when they grow up and what things they want to learn more about. You must visit the room and see their hilarious responses!

September 28, 2018
Preschoolers naturally love sorting things into different categories. Using fruits and veggies of different colors and textures, this small group of friends used their morning arrival time to sort their foods by color into the corresponding bowl. In the coming weeks, we will also begin sorting by shape, size and type.

Preschoolers' time in the library is very special. After hearing a book read aloud, each child is able to explore the library shelves and choose a book they would like to borrow. Some children chose their books quickly and others took more time to see what was available and whether or not it matched up with their interests. After checking out a book, children like to look at their new selection before heading back to the classroom.

October 1, 2018
Today was our first "Share Day" in Preschool! Each child and teacher had a chance to bring in something special to show and describe to the group. Children brought in everything from photos to fruit to shells. Each Monday we have school, children can bring in something new to share. As always, toys from home, are safest kept at home.

The dramatic play pet store opened today! Now that children have gotten a feel for the classroom routine and are becoming more comfortable caring for our toys, this store with all of its small, delicate pieces, was open for play. Two friends at a time can use the store. As you can imagine, there is already a long list of children waiting for their turn!

In gym class, there was a lot of movement happening! Groups of children were placed around cones that showed them which way to move their bodies. As each group of friends circled specific cones, they had to crawl, hop or run. When the teacher yelled "fish pond!", everyone jumped into the center of the cones, laid down and swam on their backs! So much fun!

During small group learning time, we focused on counting with one to one correspondence to ten. After playing our "apple tree" counting game, a small group of friends played "mouse count", based on the book we read the day before. This game involved rolling a cube numbered 1 to 6, counting out that number of mini mice and then placing them on top of a jar labeled with that number. These fun, interactive games help children solidify their number awareness in ways that feels more like playing, than sitting down to learn.

October 3, 2018
As a part of today's music class, Preschoolers had a chance to play the triangles! Each child was given a metal triangle and mallet to play while their teacher sang. They also danced while she played the guitar and explored other hand held instruments. They are all young musicians in the making!

Our time in the IDEA Lab was spent creating ramps. Using wooden platforms, marbles and the Big Blue Blocks, Preschoolers were able to create their own ramps of varying lengths and heights. Preschoolers could work in pairs or individually to make their structures. Some Preschoolers chose to add additional wooden pieces and cups as road blocks to keep their marbles from rolling everywhere.

October 4, 2018
Many builders arrived in Preschool today! During morning drop off, most of the class flocked to the Lego table. They were hoping to add more pieces, people and accessories to what they have been building throughout the week. Building with small pieces is great fine motor practice and a slow and easy way to transition from home to school.

Our first family guest reader joined our Morning Circle today! A Preschooler's mom read The Snail and the Whale to a captivated audience. Each Thursday, family members are welcomed into our circle to read a favorite (or favorites!) story. Preschoolers use their best listening ears and looking eyes so they don't miss any parts of the book. Our sign-up sheet for October, November and December is almost full, but there will be a new sign-up sheet in January.

Our partner play Thursdays are a chance for two friends to play together using an assortment of "table toys". This pair of friends, sorted plastic bears by color and then built towers to protect the bears from a "bad wolf"! While every other day of the week, our small group learning time focuses on language arts/literacy, math and drawing and writing, this small group time is very open ended and children can choose which toys they would like to explore and how to use them.

October 5, 2018
After watching the leaves begin to change color and drop from the trees, Preschoolers have been bringing leaves into the classroom. We decided to place some of those leaves at the art table to make leaf rubbings. This pair of friends used leaves of many sizes and colors to create their rubbings.

New puzzles are on the shelves! Since we have been learning our letter names and will be transitioning to learning letter sounds, what a great time to change the puzzles and re-stock the shelves with alphabet puzzles! This trio of friends put together an alligator alphabet puzzle. What great teamwork!

October 9, 2018
A new center opened in Family Place! The Shoe Store has closed and scratch art is open! Two Preschoolers at a time can use wooden sticks to color on black, carbon-like paper to reveal bright colors underneath! Some children prefer to scribble the black layer away, while others have a clear picture they would like to create. This center will remain open for the remainder of this week and switch to something new next week! Preschoolers love variety!

Preschoolers and Young Kindergarten friends played a hopscotch relay game today in P.E. Small groups of children had to gallop from one end of the gym to the other. Once they reached the other side, they had to do a starfish jump and then return to their teammates. Once they completed the round, they gave each other a hi-five and did it all over again!

October 10, 2018
The Clay table was quite popular today. The number stampers have been replaced with letter stampers and turquoise and pink clay along with black and blue glitter, have been added to the purple clay that was already there. Kneading and rolling the clay is great fine motor practice and will help the children feel more confident when writing.

Preschoolers are on the hunt for berries! Now that it is Fall (even though it has felt like summer!), berries and leaves are on the ground and many children are on the look out. Once berries, leaves and sticks have been gathered, Preschoolers have a "nature spot" where they can place these items until it is time to take them home.

After reading Mouse Count during small group reading time last week, some Preschoolers had a chance to play the Mouse Count game during small group learning time. Once a game or learning task has been introduced to the group, it is available for playing with during morning arrival and throughout the day. This pair of friends decided to try the counting game today. They rolled the cube to find out how many mice to put in the corresponding number jar.

October 16, 2018
The Beading Center is now open in Preschool! Two friends at a time can work on making necklaces in a variety of colors. It takes a lot of patience and fine motor work to create this wearable art. Each day children can make a new necklace and some Preschoolers already have a list of who they would like to make one for.

I
It's Shape Time! Now that Preschoolers have had a bit of practice counting objects from 1-10, we are moving on to exploring shapes! This morning we brainstormed a list of shapes Preschoolers are familiar with. Each child was given a tray of shapes to identify and then they created a multitude of shape structures! Some were cars, straight lines, a home under a shining sun and a machine that made things go fast and slow.

Today we learned our first "Lively Letter"! The quiet lip puffing "P" is the introduction to our letter sound curriculum. These fun characters help children notice the position of their teeth, tongue and mouth as they form the letter sound. Each week, Preschoolers will learn either one or a pair of letter sounds.

Wednesday's are our table drawing days. Preschoolers can draw any picture they choose, then use a date stamp to label the picture. The teacher will write any words to describe the drawing and then the picture goes into a portfolio that will go home in June. Preschoolers also practice writing their names during this time of day. It is nice to see the progression of drawing and writing from September to June.

We continue to explore ramps in the IDEA Lab. In this week's class, each child had their own ramp placed at a strategic angle, against a blue foam block. Children could use one or two balls or marbles to see if they pushed, bumped or pulled the round object to a different location. Each IDEA Lab class starts with an introduction to the activity and ends with a discussion on what worked, what did not work and what could be changed to make it better next time.

October 18, 2018
The Nursery class has been learning about transportation! This morning we borrowed three of their construction trucks to use in our block area. Two friends decided to use the trucks to help a friend build a gate and a home for her Legos. The pair of friends would load wooden blocks onto the truck and then deliver them to their friend so she could add more pieces to her structure.
Preschool teamwork at its finest!

Today was a guest reader day! A Preschooler's mom joined our Morning Circle to read Everybody Needs a Rock and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It may seem a bit early to be reading books about Christmas, but Preschoolers have been talking about the Grinch since September! We love when families share their special books with us. Our guest reader sheet is all filled up for October and November, but there are a few spots open for December!

Today we learned the partner to our "quiet lip puffing P"! The "noisy lip puffing B" has a pair of crying babies that are looking for their mother! Through the pictures, children can see that the babies mouths are open, so they know their voices must be on when they make this letter sound. Next week, we will learn another pair of "voice on" and "voice off" sounds.

October 19, 2018
After Library, Preschoolers have ticket time! Each child chooses a ticket to gain entry into the center they would like to play in. Some friends love to come back to the classroom and look at their library books. This pair of friends checked out books about one of their favorite things; dancing!

As a part of Nursery's transportation unit, the East Providence Fire Department visited this morning to talk to both classes about fire safety. After telling Nursery and Preschool friends about what to do in case of a fire, showing the fire equipment and holding the fire hose, every child who wanted a turn, got to sit in the fire truck and steer the wheel! What a fun experience!

October 22, 2018
Monday morning shares are always fun! This Preschooler decided to bring in her favorite dolphin stuffed animal. She noticed how long it was in comparison to her and wanted to demonstrate for her classmates! Other shares included skeletons, blankets, dinosaurs, stuffed animals, a food coloring box and a baby doll in a crib. Even when Preschoolers do not bring in an object to share, they can always tell the class something that is on their mind. The option to pass is also available.

Today we continued to practice identifying our letter names. Each child and teacher was given either two or three sand paper letters that they were encouraged to name. Once all letters had been flipped over, identified and traced, we put the letters in order from A to Z! Each Monday we practice our letters during our small group learning time, but will soon begin learning about rhyming and beginning and ending sounds.

The silly scissors are at the art table! After noticing the jagged and crooked lines and bumpy half circles that these special scissors make, Preschoolers wanted to give them a try! They have been exploring the different shapes they can make and cut out, which coincides perfectly with our study of shapes!

October 23, 2018
Today's small group Math learning time focused on shapes. Each Preschooler has a shape tray where they have an assortment of shapes. After naming the shapes on the tray, we took time to count how many sides and corners each shape had. We recorded each answer on our classroom whiteboard. After finishing up our "work", Preschoolers had a chance to build structures out of their shapes!

Preschoolers learned about relay runs in PE this morning! Four teams of four children were in line behind their own orange cone. Once a child from one team ran to the next cone, the child from that next team would then run to the team across from their team. After joining this new team, the child who just finished running would get in line at the end and continue with the game. The children were a little confused at first, but they will have a chance to practice their new skill on Thursday.

October 24, 2018
Preschool has an expert paper airplane maker! This friend has been making paper airplanes for her classmates over the past two days. This small group of friends decided to create a game where they sat on their smart spots and flew their paper airplane to a friend across from them. No one got hurt and everyone had fun!

Today's Music class featured a giant parachute! After singing a few songs and before hearing a spooky Halloween book sung aloud to the group, Preschoolers had a chance to hold the parachute and take a turn running underneath! This fun parachute makes another appearance at the end of the school year on Field Day!

Preschool engineers began learning about programming today! In the IDEA Lab, each Preschooler had a chance to explore the Bee Bots and decide which direction it would move. After learning how to program the Bee Bot, planning where it would go and touching the correct buttons to make the bot move, Preschoolers and their teachers got to see the bot in action!

October 25, 2018
Preschool has many saving shelves! Children work very hard on their structures throughout the week, and it is just too hard to let all of that good work go to waste. Once the shelves in the back of the classroom are filled, children begin using the "table toy" shelf to display their work.

Children use the Block Area in so many different ways! This Preschool friend created steps to walk across! There were specific rules on where everyone could step and what would happen if they landed in the wrong place! One of the beautiful things about Preschool is that everyone comes together to use the same materials in a variety of ways. How creative!

October 29, 2018
Preschoolers began their day with a "Pumpkin Challenge"! Using cubes that are a part of their table toy manipulatives, each Preschooler had a chance to guess and then count how many cubes tall they thought the classroom pumpkin was. This fun predicting and counting activity will continue throughout the next two days until Halloween, when the pumpkin will be used in a few different ways!

Today we played our Alphabet Mystery Box game! This game encourages children to pull an object out of the box and match it up with its beginning letter. Preschoolers loved reaching into the box to find a surprise! We noticed that some of the objects were missing, so we searched our classroom to find new manipulatives that would correspond with the empty letters.

October 31, 2018
It was a busy Halloween in Preschool! The art table was set up with paper pumpkins that could be cut, made into cards or decorated with glitter, googly eyes or stickers! We had black clay at the clay table and our classroom pumpkin was cut open and carved! During Morning Circle, before we cut the pumpkin open, Preschoolers predicted how many seeds they thought were inside. Responses varied from 5 to 20, 000!

To celebrate Halloween during snack time, we had a "naughty" and a "nice" snack! The night before, the Preschooler's teacher made rice krispie treats and cut them in the shape of pumpkins and leaves. As a class, Preschoolers used red or green apples, caramel sauce, mini marshmallows and carrot sticks to make vampire teeth and fangs! Delicious and somewhat nutritious!

Early Childhood has begun composting! Led by our IDEA Lab teacher, classes have begun collecting food scraps left over from morning snack. Apple cores and skin, along with banana peels have been placed in a bucket for worms to eat. This morning, Preschoolers had a chance to use magnifying glasses to see the worms up close and learn about the composting process.

November 1, 2018
A Preschooler's family joined our morning circle! Our guest readers are such a joy to have in our classroom. This Preschooler and her family read an interactive book that had every teacher and child looking for "wacky" pictures within each page of the story. Children found shoes on the ceiling, palm trees growing out of toilets and statues riding horses backwards! It was certainly a wacky book!

Preschoolers worked on their sit-ups and leaps in today's gym class! While forming teams of four, Preschool and Young Kindergarten children were tasked with leaping over two hurdles and running to the opposite end of the gym. Once they reached the other side, they had to lay down and do four sit ups; which is an increase of one from the last class! Wow, they are burning off all of those calories from their Halloween candy!

November 2, 2018
During yesterday's rest time, 8th graders visited our classroom to share information with us. As the holidays approach, our school is looking for ways to help in the community. Each classroom has been invited to bring in food items to be donated to a local food pantry. Preschool is responsible for bringing in bags and boxes of rice and pasta. This food drive runs until November 9th. Preschoolers can bring their items to their classroom and we will bring them to the Commons as a class.

Preschoolers had their very first visit with their 3rd grade Buddies! One third grade class came down to play and get to know the Preschool class. Preschoolers and third graders introduced themselves then began to play in the classroom. Children naturally gravitated towards specific children, but everyone will play together for a couple of weeks before teachers decide which pairs of children will be together for the school year. So much fun!

November 6, 2018
Dramatic Play is now a restaurant and dress up center! Two friends can dress up as a chef or nurse and order food from the exclusive Preschool restaurant! Complete with menus and pads and pencils for taking orders, Preschoolers can use their imaginations and cooking skills to serve each other delicious food. This center will be open until Thanksgiving Break and dress up clothes will be changed each week.

During our last small group math time, Preschoolers created structures out of paper shapes. Today, children had an opportunity to present their work to the class. Each child described what they had created and then told the group how many of each shape they used. After a round of applause, each child chose the next child to present after them. This activity begins to prepare the children for presenting their family posters to the class, later in the school year.

November 7, 2018
Preschoolers have been contributing to the food drive all week! After gathering quite a bit of pasta and rice, each child brought a bag or box down to the Commons where it was placed in boxes and will be delivered to a local food pantry. The older children will be participating in a "turkey trot" later this week, as a way to remember the importance of helping others.

In the IDEA Lab, Preschoolers continued their work with Bee-Bots. Having the group of ten split into two half groups, allowed each child to program their own Bee-Bot and watch it move on their chosen path. While one small group was in the Lab, the other group played outside and finally enjoyed some sunshine!

November 8, 2018
Today was a guest reader day! A Preschooler's dad joined our Morning Circle to read What Do You Do With a Problem? and There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell. Children love inviting their families to our classroom and the stories they share are so engaging. We are more than half way through our first list of guest readers. Once we return from Winter Break, families can sign-up to read again!

November 9, 2018
When Preschoolers arrive each day, they have an assortment of toys to play with before Morning Circle begins. This pair of friends decided to use our alphabet mat and letter bean bags to match upper and lowercase letters together. Now that we have begun learning letter sounds and have a good grasp on letter names, we will begin learning about words that rhyme!

After returning from the library each Friday morning, Preschoolers have "ticket time"! Most centers in the classroom are open and children can choose which center they will play in until they decide to make a different choice. There are a specific number of tickets for each play space and once a ticket is gone, children are encouraged to play in an open center.

The Preschool restaurant is open for a second week! Instead of dressing as a chef or nurse, an airplane pilot and astronaut are taking orders, cooking and serving food! The astronaut suit and hat sparked an interest in space, so teachers placed space shuttles, space rocks and astronauts in the Block Area!

November 14, 2018
sPreschoolers practice their fine motor skills in many different ways. After introducing animal shapes and strings for sewing, these Preschoolers decided to give this new task a try! Using precise movements to pull and push the string through the holes, they completed the outline of an animal!

This week, we began talking about sorting! After brainstorming what the word "sort" means and the different ways things can be sorted, Preschoolers had a chance to sort shapes, animals, fruits and veggies by color. This pair of friends sorted circle stackers by color and made them into soups that had to be baked! Separating objects by color is one way to sort. Next week we will sort by a different attribute!

Today, the Art table looked like it was time to celebrate someone's birthday! After teachers found some old party supplies, it seemed like a good idea to put those materials at the art table and encourage Preschoolers to let their creativity flow! Children used scissors, glue, beads and buttons to decorate birthday hats and plates.

Time for a scavenger hunt! In today's gym class, Preschoolers and their Young Kindergarten friends had a chance to skip to one colored hula hoop and drop an object of that same color inside it. Children then had to look at the picture attached to the hula hoop and do that specific body movement back to their original location. Everyone was tired and ready for a drink of water after all of that exercise!

Preschoolers finally have their very own 3rd grade Buddy! After playing together for a few weeks, each Preschooler now has either a 3rd grade buddy or a Preschool and 3rd grade buddy! Each time we meet, the children will have a chance to read their library book and play together. Some weeks we may even visit the 3rd grade classroom!

Preschoolers look forward to Monday Share day! Every other day in morning circle, children can speak about something that happened in their life, a trip they are looking forward to or going to a friend's birthday party over the weekend. They can also choose to pass their turn. On Mondays, children can bring in something meaningful to them and tell their friends and teachers about it. This friend was excited to share about his new Pete the Cat stuffed animal and the book that came with it.

Thanksgiving is just days away! Preschoolers have spent the last couple of weeks reading books about being thankful and ways to help others. Today, we each decorated a thankful leaf and had a teacher write what we are thankful for, on the leaf. The leaves will be displayed in the field house for tomorrow's Thanksgiving assembly. Although we may not be in attendance, our thoughts will be present.

November 26, 2018
Monday morning "share" days are always exciting! Everyone brought an object to share on this first day of school after Thanksgiving break. The children's shares ranged from stuffed animals, to antique trains, to decorated jewelry boxes to soft blankets. This Preschooler spent some of her Thanksgiving break coloring a beautiful picture she couldn't wait to show the class.

During our small group learning time, we began talking about rhymes! After brainstorming what a "rhyme" is and generating our own rhymes, we played a new game! Our rhyming game has a series of cards with pictures on them. Each child chose an object from our rhyming drawer and then matched it to the card it rhymed with. Making learning fun is the best part of Preschool!

During our small group read aloud, we have been reading books about sharing, being responsible and caring for others. This topic fits in perfectly with one of our visiting authors, Oge Mora. She will read her popular book, Thank You, Omu to Young KIndergarten and Kindergarten on Thursday afternoon. We hope to join the group and hear the author read her book.

November 27, 2018
The Alphabet Mystery Box game has become quite popular! Preschoolers are very excited about letters, especially their sounds. This game helps the children practice their letter identification, letter sounds and adds a bit of mystery, as they are asked not to peek while they pull an object out of the box and then match it with the letter it begins with.

Dramatic Play is now a supermarket! Two friends at a time can sell, purchase, cart around and bag up both real and pretend groceries! This pair of friends decided to buy everything off the shelves and then sort them based on whether or not they were real (and came from their teacher's home!) or were pretend.

The painting easel is a place where two friends can paint, individually or collaboratively. This morning, while painting, one child asked her friend to paint a lollipop on her picture. It is so nice to see how the children interact with one another and show care and value for each other's work.

After missing our IDEA lab class last week because of Thanksgiving break, the class was happy to get back to the lab! Today's class focused on an introduction to nuts and bolts and how things can be screwed together. Each child was given a bag of nuts and bolts and a wooden wheel to explore putting on and taking off each piece. Some friends had even more of an adventure when their little fingers got stuck in the holes! We quickly learned how to fix the problem!

Preschoolers have their choice of toys to play with as they begin their day in school. These choices include building with a variety of toys, drawing, putting together puzzles, painting at the easel, molding clay, looking at books or using one of the games we have played with during one of our learning times. This pair of friends decided to use a counting game where they roll the dice and place that number of mice in the corresponding jar.

Today's guest reader joined our morning circle and read a book about a very naughty dog! Naughty Mabel had both teachers and Preschoolers fascinated with her silly antics. This Preschooler's mom also read an interchangeable book about a butterfly and a caterpillar! We have two more guest readers signed up for the month of December, and then a new group of loved ones will sign up to read in January!

Preschoolers are becoming so independent! After deciding they wanted to work on a new variety of puzzles, they decided to choose a few from the cupboards. One friend chose a fairy tale puzzle, while another chose a construction zone puzzle. Many friends joined in to help put the puzzles together.

Yesterday afternoon, our full day Preschoolers had a chance to spend time with one of our visiting authors, Oge Mora. They had a chance to hear her read her story Thank You, Omu and see her original drawings from the book. As Preschoolers walked to the library this morning, they excitedly shared their impressions of the visit, with their librarian.

Signing in from "not here" to "here" is the first thing Preschoolers do as they arrive each day. Every child and teacher has a flamingo with their names on it, which they move as they enter the classroom. As we transition to the second part of the school year, instead of just signing in, each child and teacher will have a "question of the day" to answer. After everyone answers the question by placing their name under one of the provided answers, a tally will be taken during Morning Circle. This activity will reinforce the recognition of everyone's names, help us practice counting and know which friends are in school. So much learning from one small task!

There are authors in Preschool! Many books have been written by the junior authors in the classroom, in just two days! After stapling pages of paper together, children have been drawing illustrations and asking teachers to write words to go with their drawings. It is almost like our table drawing Wednesdays, except children are returning to their books and adding more details frequently!

A Preschooler's family joined us today to share their Hanukkah traditions. After reading two beautiful stories, each child was given a dreidel and taught how to play a Hanukkah game. This fun game encouraged the children to read the symbols on the dreidel, spin it and then see which side it landed on. Depending on the symbol, children had to put half, all, none or a small amount of their coins in the middle. Each child will also get to take home a chocolate coin! We love when we can share our traditions with each other!

December 5, 2018
Table Drawing is an important part of our Wednesdays. Each child has their own set of markers and paper to draw any picture they would like. At the start of the year we would see a lot of scribbles, lines and rushed work. As we enter our fourth month of table drawing, we are beginning to see stories with many descriptive details and colors. So much growth has happened in such a small amount of time!

In the IDEA Lab, small groups of Preschoolers continued to build with nuts and bolts. Some children built cars to ride on, while others created lawn mowers to cut pretend grass! After taking a poll on whether or not the children wanted to continue to use nuts and bolts next week, a large majority said yes!

December 6, 2018
Our construction workers have a new project! A Preschooler felt her rest time stuffed tiger needed a new home. She and a friend decided to build a wooden home in the block area. After assembling the size and amount of blocks needed, this pair of friends went to work! Like most Preschool projects, this one was short lived, but it was fun while it lasted!

Dinosaurs are on the minds of many Preschoolers! After teachers realized this new interest, they put dinosaur rubbing plates at the art table! Children can choose from 6 different types of dinosaur babies and adults, place the paper on top of the dino plate and then rub a crayon on top to reveal the picture. Perhaps we will learn more about dinosaurs in the coming weeks, but we have plenty of 4 and 5 year old experts already!

During our language arts learning time, we played our rhyming game! Each child chose which card they wanted to use and then picked objects that rhymed with their picture card. Preschoolers love learning when it is fun and engaging. We decided we will play the rhyming game one more week and then move on to something new.

December 7, 2018
One of the best parts of our Library class is the walk through the hallways. Our librarian shares a poem with the class and today's poem inspired a little dance and special movement. After arriving at the library, the Preschoolers heard a story about a little boy who had a cold. Definitely a story we can all relate to!

After exploring sorting by different attributes during our math learning time, Preschoolers were excited to try sorting games on their own! During today's arrival, children could sort cookies by color, shape, design or by whole or bitten cookies. Other groups of friends could sort shapes by color, size and design. This mathematical thinking will help set the foundation for geometry and other math concepts as the children get older.

It was a Buddy day! We visited our 3rd grade buddies classroom and had a chance to explore their space and toys. Some friends chose to draw or build, while others played games. After playing inside for a bit, we all put our coats on and played outside! Preschoolers said it was the best buddy day ever!

December 10, 2018
Share day is always a highlight of the week! Preschoolers brought in everything from stuffed animals, to a magical paintbrush that allowed its holder to travel to far away lands, to a guitar, to a set of butterflies and origami animals. This Preschooler is looking forward to the day he looses his first tooth and can put it in his tooth fairy box. He says it is still about two years away!

All of Early Childhood was treated to a few songs by the Middle School Handbell Ensemble. After hearing the beautiful music down the hall, we left morning circle and gathered in shared space to hear the older children playing. The Ensemble performs all around the state and will also perform at the Winter Assembly, along with Preschool! More details to come.

December 11, 2018
Preschoolers love to be the teacher! After placing little gingerbread people, faces and ridged paper at the art table, one child decided to make a family of gingerbread people and a home for them to live in. This idea sparked interest in other friends and they joined in and created their own homes!

There are so many types of building toys in our Preschool classroom. Some toys are meant for 2 friends, while others can be used by up to 6 children! This Preschooler wanted to see how tall his tower structure could go before it crashed to the floor. With the assistance of a teacher standing close by, he used all of the small square and triangle magna tiles!

Our table drawing portfolios are getting more filled each week! Preschoolers are now confidently writing their names and drawing detailed pictures. After words have been written to describe their work, they place their drawing in the folder. Children look at books quietly while the rest of their classmates finish.

December 13, 2018
Partner play Thursdays are an important part of the Preschool day! Children are paired with a friend they don't often spend time with to interact, create together and problem solve. This pair of friends created a building for their bears to live in. It even had a car they could drive! It is necessary for all children to experience play with more than just their "best friends". It encourages different types of play and friendship building skills. Children often seek out these friends later in the day after having a chance to play with them one-on-one.

December 14, 2018
Quite a few centers are changing in Preschool! As we begin to prepare for a new year and new units of study, centers have been cleaned, re-organized or are under construction. Legos have been cleared from the saving shelves, the paint has been cleaned and put away until after winter break and Family Place, our dramatic play center has closed and will open as something new on Monday. Today is the last day for our sensory table, which has been filled with moon sand and recycled tubes and caps. These materials will be emptied and the table will open again in January.

December 17, 2018
Winter and the holidays are definitely on the minds of many Preschoolers! Today's shares were an assortment of ornaments, letters to Santa, baked snowflake candies and coloring pictures of snowflakes. This Preschooler was thinking of warmer seasons and excitedly shared her soccer trophies. She hopes to win more next season!

Pet Care is open! Family Place is now a center where children can care for animals! During small group reading time, we will also read books about animals, learn how to keep them healthy, what they like to eat and how they exercise. While in the Preschool Pet Care office, children can bandage, give shots and groom the animals that are there.

December 18, 2018
Sometimes, building on the floor is just more fun! This small group of friends decided to build a tower of magna tiles on the rug! They worked together to see how high their tower could go and what they could build that would use all of the magna tiles in the bin. Engineering in its greatest form!

Land and sea animals have been added to the Block Area! Small groups of friends have taken turns building homes they thought were suitable for each animal. Some have constructed aquariums and enclosed homes, while others sectioned off the counter above the shelves and allowed the animals to take a much needed nap.

Preschoolers now have multi-colored tape they can use at the art table! Although the art table is closing this week in preparation for winter break, Preschoolers have shown that they can be responsible and begin to use tape on their own. After reviewing the safest ways to use the tape (cut with scissors or pull gently across the edge) many children wanted to experiment! Some children pulled a piece of each color of tape and placed it on their papers, while others used the tape to secure beads, buttons and jewels.

December 19, 2018
Preschoolers practiced for the Winter Assembly today! On Friday morning, Preschool and Young Kindergarten will make their singing debut! The classes will sing two songs before the assembly officially begins, to welcome everyone into the space. Although they practiced in the theatre, the assembly will take place in the field house to accommodate the entire school.

Preschoolers explored droppers in today's IDEA Lab class. Children were given bowls of water mixed with food coloring and empty vials to fill! Children worked hard to squeeze the droppers as they sucked up and released the colorful liquid. Their teacher called it making "squirts" and "drips". They were so busy and attentive, the room was silent!

We learned our 3rd "super star" Lively Letter today, which also happens to be the 16th letter sound we have learned in total! This little toddler letter wants to get up-up-up out of their crib, so we lift our arms as we say the letter sound. The stories that accompany the sounds are memorable and fun, so Preschoolers have no trouble remembering the sound or the story.

December 20, 2018
Some Preschoolers know just where and what they want to play with as soon as they come to school! This pair of friends wanted to build a dog hotel using magna tiles and plastic dogs. They created their structure, then went on to draw at the easel. Another set of friends came along and added more to the structure before it was cleaned up and put away.

January 7, 2019
Welcome Back!!! Preschoolers (and their teachers) are so happy to be back together again. After two weeks away from school, we needed a few reminders of the rules and routines of our school day, but everyone settled in nicely. Our first "object share" of the new year was filled with stories of time spent with family, trips and new stuffed animals, lunch bags and toys that were received over the holiday.

During our small group learning time, we reviewed some of the literacy concepts we had practiced from September through December. Small groups of friends matched letter bean bags on our letter mat, a second group traced sand paper and magnetic letters and this group of friends matched objects that rhymed, together. Then each group switched to another activity.

January 8, 2019
We have fun, new sand at our Sensory table! After clearing out the recycled materials and moon sand before the holidays, we made space for green and yellow (although the children call it light orange!) sand, mini dino cups and spoons. Children have been using the cups and spoons to measure how many spoonfuls it takes to fill the cup, along with building mountains, monsters and anything else they can imagine!

While our gym teacher is on paternity leave to care for his new baby, we are getting to know our new teacher! Preschoolers had a chance to learn about and practice an obstacle course. There were four different stations set up where children could balance on a beam, tumble on mats and climb over and under hurdles. Each station was introduced today and children will have a chance to give each a try during the next class.

Preschoolers are very interested in writing words and deciphering what letters put together, spell. At the art table, they had a chance to explore our word stencils. These three letter words are easier to sound out now that we have learned almost half of our "Lively Letter" sounds. The stencils have a picture of an object, then the word written underneath. What a fun way to begin spelling and sounding out words!

January 9, 2019
During today's visit to the IDEA lab, Preschoolers explored sound and how sound is created. Using a series of bowls, sponges, metal tops, plastic baskets and wooden sticks, each child had a chance to see which materials created loud and soft sounds when banged together. Next week, Preschoolers will make their own noisemakers!

Our first table drawing session after two weeks away from school, was a success! Preschoolers remembered to trace their name cards before writing their names on their paper. They included many details and colors to describe their stories and quietly looked at books once they had completed their work.

During our read aloud time, we have been hearing books about animals and learning how to care for them. A Preschooler was particularly interested in snapping turtles and whether or not they would make good pets. After seeing and hearing about their sharp claws, sharp beaks and large size, we all decided they were better off in the ponds and rivers!

During small group partner play, two Preschoolers worked together to create buildings, rocket ships, boxes of fruit to be sent out to grocery stores and anything else their imaginations could come up with. This Preschooler worked with her partner to make a home for the rubber animals. Open ended play encourages the children to use their own ideas, planning and construction to make their ideas come to life!

Who knew paper towel rolls, wooden sticks, egg cartons and yarn could be so much fun! Our art table held materials that could be used in any way Preschoolers decided! This pair of friends chose to use paper towel rolls and egg cartons to make boats! One friend attached string to her boat so a little dinghy could be pulled behind! So creative!

January 11, 2019
Preschoolers love their library time! They began their visit with a beautiful book about one animal caring for another, and letting it go when it was strong enough to be on its own. Preschoolers then chose a new book from the shelves or the one they had "reserved" before Winter Break. While other friends were still searching, a small group of friends found time to look at their book in the "book nook".

January 14, 2019
Preschoolers love being the leader! Not only do they get to be at the head of the line to walk outside and to specials, they also get to choose the body movement their classmates and teachers do in Morning Circle! Today's leader decided to try something new and have each participant "spin" to start the day!

Preschoolers shared stuffed animals, rocks, jewels, Gordon pencil cases, dinosaurs and their words during our share time. This Preschooler showed a picture of herself and her little sister, holding their brand new baby brother! What a beautiful addition to the family! Speaking of families, please send in 6 pictures of important people in your child's life! We will be highlighting each of our families in the coming weeks.

We began a new learning concept during our small group time. Now that we have learned about rhymes and are just about half way through our "Lively Letter" sounds, we started talking about beginning sounds. The class had a chance to explore object cards and match small items that had the same beginning sound. Children were a bit confused at first because it was so similar to our rhyming game, but the more we practice, the easier it will become.

On what would have been Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's 90th birthday, Preschoolers began to learn what a great man he was. We read a short board book about how Dr. King wanted everyone to be treated fairly, despite their differences. This was a simple message each child understood. As the week continues, we will read more books about how Dr. King changed the world.

January 16, 2019
Preschool friends explored felt materials this morning! Three felt boards were accompanied by many different animals, nursery rhyme characters, clothes, weather scenes and accessories. There are endless ways to use these materials and small groups of friends arranged and rearranged their scenes as they arrived at school.

The Gordon School Art Show is on display in the theatre. After music class and before table drawing, the class had a chance to view the older children's sculptures, paintings, sewing projects, clay vessels, Egyptian necklaces and books. Beginning next year in Young Kindergarten, current Preschoolers will have their art displayed too! The Art show will be open until the end of the week.

Our Family posters are half way complete! Children have been bringing in pictures of important people in their lives. The 6 pictures are then arranged on a 12x18 sized paper and each Preschooler gets to describe the photo while the teacher writes their words. Once all of our posters are complete, we will present them to the class and then hang them on our classroom bulletin board.

Big books are becoming quite the hit in Preschool! After reading a standard sized version of The Colors of Us, preschool teachers took out a larger copy of that and other books. Having a large copy of Dinosaur Roar that was almost the size of some classmates, was very exciting to our dinosaur experts!

January 18, 2019
Preschoolers made "flubber" today! Using warm water, glue, borax, food coloring and glitter, each child had a chance to mix and mold this sticky substance. Many children wanted to bring the flubber home, but we decided to leave this batch at school and make another batch in a few weeks that can be taken home.

Preschoolers love their time with their 3rd grade Buddies! Each Friday they come down to our classroom (or we visit theirs) to read and play together. We also spend time together on the Kindergarten playground. This pair of Preschoolers was busy showing their 3rd grade buddy our "lively letter" sounds.

Preschoolers will be learning about simple machines! What better way to begin to explore this concept than by using gears. This small group of friends connected green plates together and placed gears on them. Using their hands or a turning knob, they could move one or many of the gears. Simple machines make hard work easier!

January 23, 2019
Preschoolers have been stuck inside due to the icy conditions outside. Luckily, in today's visit to the IDEA Lab, the snow and ice came inside to us! Children had an opportunity to explore these cold weather particles and see how they move, form and melt. Although we love the lab, we look forward to heading outside once the ice around campus melts.

January 25, 2019
Finally free to play outside! After frigid temperatures and icy playgrounds, Preschoolers were able to play outside for over an hour! They spent most of the morning digging and breaking up ice, engaging in imaginary games that involved ice queens and magic crystals and swinging on the swings.

After playing outside, the class came inside to have snack, read the book Mixed, A Colorful Story and have ticket time. Each child chose a center they wanted to play in and spent the last half of the day engaged in free play. While many children switched their play centers during that time, some remained at their first choice.

January 28, 2019
Today was an object share day! Preschoolers were excited to talk about favorite stuffed animals, watches, Chapstick and beads found at the art table. This Preschooler showed us a map of the skiing trail she visited this past weekend. We love when we can hear about each others' adventures!

After exploring our beginning sounds game, Preschoolers were introduced to our classroom iPad. After talking about safe ways to handle the learning tool and the importance of using the stylus while working, each Preschooler practiced writing their name. Using the application Little Writer, which allows each child to trace their name in upper case letters, every Preschooler had a chance to explore the iPad. This new tool will only be used occasionally to practice skills the children are comfortable with, and always with the guidance of a teacher.

Preschoolers began presenting their "Important People/Family Posters"! After reading a beautiful book about a grandfather and his adopted grandson and a special tradition they have, two friends had a chance to describe and share their photos with the class. Throughout this week, every teacher and child will have a chance to share their poster. Finished posters will be displayed in the classroom until the end of the school year.

January 29, 2019
Preschoolers are becoming so comfortable with creating patterns! After reviewing the patterns we have learned already (AB, ABC and AABB) and creating and fixing patterns as a large group, each child had a set of table toys they could use to make their own pattern! Some children decided to make one, while others created four different types!

Preschoolers were treated to a guest reader today! We normally have our readers visit during Morning Circle, but since this Preschooler's mom is a teacher at our school, she was able to come today after snack! We heard The Princess Knight, a great story about a princess who preferred riding horses and jousting to sewing and finding a husband. What a great story with a powerful message.

Beginning next week, Preschoolers will learn about simple machines! They already know that simple machines make hard work easier. For the last couple of weeks, they have been exploring gears. While at the art table today, they had a chance to use levers. These little pushable machines showed children with just the right amount of pressure, they could stamp out different shapes on their paper. Pulleys, marbles mazes and "take apart" will be introduced soon.

After hearing Yellow Yellow read aloud, Preschoolers in the IDEA Lab were tasked with creating something yellow out of duplos. Some friends chose to build on the floor, while others built at the tables. Some friends added cranks and rings to their structures that they could move up and down. Their structures were as varied as their imaginations.

January 31, 2019
Preschoolers were treated to an Irish tale today! Our guest reader read Finn MacCoul and His Fearless Wife. A very funny story about a large man, his wife and their adventures together in Ireland. Preschoolers enjoyed the story and were able to remain attentive throughout the whole book.

Each child and teacher in the school is taking part in Gordon's Strategic Planning; even Preschoolers! During today's learning time, small groups of children drew a picture of something they love about their school. Some friends said they loved the library, playground and gym class. Other children said they loved their teachers and the toys in the classroom.

February 1, 2019
Preschoolers learned a new way to sign in to school! Beginning Monday, each member of the Preschool classroom will have a question to answer as they arrive. The questions and answers will change every school day. During morning circle, the leader will help count how many friends are in school and which answers had more or less responses, based on how everyone signs in. We practiced today before ticket time.

We had a guest reader during today's library class! Many children were interested in Groundhog's day and what it could mean if a groundhog does or does not see its shadow. After hearing Gregory's Shadow, Preschooler's each chose a book to bring home. Teachers talked about remembering to bring our library books back to school, so other children can enjoy them.

Marble mazes were new in the classroom today! After getting rid of the sand in the sensory table, Preschoolers used the space to create mazes of all different heights, lengths and sizes. After building different mazes, children noticed that the larger marbles didn't go as fast or as far as the smaller ones.

During our learning time, Preschoolers rotated through language arts activities. Four different stations were set up where friends could practice tracing letters, putting objects that rhyme together, matching letter bean bags to our letter mat and using our Alphabet Mystery Box game to find the letter each object began with. Our fifth station was practicing our fine motor skills while tracing our name on the iPad.

February 5, 2019
Preschoolers have been exploring patterns for a few weeks! During today's math learning time, teachers introduced a variety of pattern games for the children to engage with throughout their school day. There were cookies with a variety of designs and shapes, plastic buttons and pattern puzzles that could be connected together to create a multitude of patterns. After having a chance to try each game, children used table toy manipulatives to make their own patterns.

Partner tag was a fun game to play in gym class! Children were paired with a partner and encouraged to chase their partner and tag them before a portion of a song ended. Once the song finished playing, the other partner had to chase and tag their partner! Preschoolers have a lot of energy and this game helped to focus some of that energy in a specific direction.

We painted our Valentines/showing care boxes today. Children and teachers brought in boxes for every child to paint. The boxes will dry and then be decorated next week. On Valentine's Day, each child will bring in a homemade or store bought card for every classmate and place them in their boxes. The boxes will be taken home at the end of that day.

There was a task to complete during today's visit to the IDEA Lab. There was a top made of duplos, but a machine needed to be built to help the top spin. Preschoolers worked with their teacher step by step to build a "spinner". We have been talking in the classroom about how machines make hard work easier, and that was demonstrated in the lab!

Snack time is a time during the day where Preschoolers can count, help pass out supplies and clean up after themselves. Everyone has a job and responsibility to take what they need, get some energy for running and playing outside and then throwing their trash away. Who knew something as simple as eating could be a learning experience!

February 11, 2019
Valentine's Day is fast approaching! Preschoolers painted their boxes last week and today they spent some time decorating. Using stickers, ribbon, pipe cleaners and glue, children turned their shoeboxes into Valentine masterpieces! Valentines will be exchanged on Thursday and boxes will go home that day.

Preschoolers are very interested in writing letters and spelling words. During our learning time, we practiced different ways to form our uppercase letters. Using big and little lines and curves, each child had a chance to create the first letter of their name. Using our trace and write boards, children were able to trace the first letter of their name, then write the first letter of their name, then watch it disappear as they lifted the plastic mat. We will continue these activities and also incorporate shaving cream and clay into our learning.

Pulleys are open! After exploring gears, marble mazes and levers, each child has had a chance to use our classroom pulleys! Two friends at a time can choose from an assortment of materials to place inside the basket and use pulleys to raise and lower their load. We have learned that simple machines make work easier, so we are testing that theory!

Preschoolers did the demonstrating during today's math lesson. After weeks of learning about and making patterns, each child had a chance to start a pattern and then choose a friend to extend and complete their pattern. This activity helped children see themselves not only as learners, but also as teachers.

February 13, 2019
Preschool friends couldn't wait to get out into the slushy, wet snow! While half of the class was working in the IDEA Lab, the second half had a chance to play outside! One friend built a snowman, while others trekked through the slippery snow and even took a break to sit and lay down.

Pulleys have been up for just three days and Preschoolers have really gotten the hang of these simple machines! They have learned that they must lift and lower their baskets slowly, so nothing inside breaks! This pair of friends worked together to see who had the heavier load. One filled their pulley basket with wooden blocks, while the other filled their basket with letter bean bags. Can you guess which was heavier?

February 14, 2019
Happy Valentine's Day! Preschoolers were so excited to get to school and put their valentines in their friend's boxes! After carefully painting and decorating their boxes, today is the day they get to exchange cards! After our real aloud, children opened their boxes, explored what was inside and will take their boxes home to share with their family.

February 15, 2019
Preschoolers love our matching games! After introducing an object matching game yesterday, today friends had a chance to match different faces of children from around the world! Preschool children are very interested in who has the most matches, who received the first match and who "won" the game. We encourage everyone to have fun and focus more attention on the experience.

February 19, 2019
Preschool Take A Part has begun! After weeks of gathering broken machines, children were finally able to begin unscrewing machines and finding out what is inside them. We started with a pencil sharpener during morning circle. After talking about safety and the rules of the center, two friends at a time will be able to work together to break apart these once useful machines. This center will remain open after March break.

During our language arts learning time, small groups of friends worked on forming and writing letters. This threesome used big and little lines and curves to first form letters on their own and then form the letter on matching cards. Other pairs of friends used our magic erase and trace and write boards to complete similar writing tasks. Now that everyone is familiar with these tools, they can be used throughout the Preschool day.

February 22, 2019
Pulleys are still open for exploration! While using wooden blocks to fill the baskets Preschoolers realized that the baskets had pockets. They filled the pockets with wooden blocks and noticed that it didn't take as much energy to lift and lower the baskets. Pulleys and distributing weight, make hard work easier.

It is only our first week of take a part and we have already disassembled almost three machines! We started with a pencil sharpener, then took apart one radio and today we began to break down a second radio. Preschoolers love seeing what they can find inside old machines. We have been keeping all of the wires, suction cups and various materials we find for another project.

February 25, 2019
Preschoolers have loved having our "question of the day" as a way to sign in to school. Every day there is a new question about food, family, transportation or feelings. Once Morning Circle begins, the leader has a chance to count the responses, say which answer has the least and most responses and see who has not arrived at school. We will have a new question through the rest of the school year.

Object share day is a fun way to start the week! This Preschooler wanted to share her family piggy banks with the class. Other friends brought in costumes, baby pictures, rock collections, wooden dinosaurs and a constructed lego truck. Children are very good about leaving their "shares" in their cubby until they leave for the day.

Today, the art table was home to rolling shapes and cardboard squares. Friends started out by rolling their chosen shape onto the square and then taping the squares together to make homes, tents and other structures. Having a variety of tools, paper and drawing and writing materials, allows the children to be creative and think freely.

February 26, 2019
A Preschool friend brought in some bird seed this morning. Before starting our day, we put on our winter coats and filled our classroom bird feeder. Each child had a chance to fill a cup with the seed and then pour it into the feeder. Since our feeder is hooked up to a pulley, everyone pitched in and raised our feeder to its original position. We hope the birds visit us soon!

Our Math learning time focused on counting with one to one correspondence to 20! Using unifix cubes and colorful counting mats, each child had a chance to count a small number (1-10) and a larger number (11-20). The teens are always tricky for young children, so we will keep practicing throughout the next few weeks.

February 27, 2019
Preschool's study of patterns came in handy today! While in the IDEA Lab, children had a chance to hear a book about patterns and then create their own! Some children used cubes to construct and piece together their patterns, while others used paper and colored squares to place their patterns in a neat row. It's lovely when what happens in the classroom connects to what is being studied outside of the classroom.

Nursery, Preschool, Young Kindergarten and our 3rd grade buddies, gathered in the library for a brief presentation about penguins. We will all be collecting pennies and other money to help protect and save African penguins. We have spent a portion of this week reading books about penguins and will now have a "collection tower" in the Commons where we can bring coins and paper money to be donated.

Fuse beads are open at the art table! These fun designs help with fine motor strengthening and create beautiful works of art that can be brought home. There are an assortment of plastic animals, shapes and nature discs with tiny pegs covering it. Children must use patience and persistence to put one bead on each peg. Once the disc is filled, a teacher will iron the disc, peel the fused creation off, let it cool and then send it home.

In gym class, each child was responsible for returning a specific colored ball to its matching basket. While moving from one basket to the center of the gym, Preschoolers had to skip, crawl or hop. Later in the class, they played a tagging game with a fuzzy ball.
What creative ways to keep the children moving!

A penguin expert from Mystic Aquarium visited us today. She shared with us many ways we can help keep penguins and all animals safe and healthy. We will be collecting pennies and other money until the week after spring break to help in this effort .
The school that donates the most money will receive a visit from a real penguin!

Preschoolers learned their final Lively Letter sound today! After 5 months of meeting each fun character, learning their stories and forming the letters with our mouths, tongues and bodies, we learned the "The Car Sound", "C". Now that we know all of the letter sounds, after spring break, we can start putting these sounds together to make words!

The Kindergarten popcorn sale was today! After music class, we visited one of the Kindergarten classrooms to donate our quarters and receive a bag of popcorn. This yearly event helps purchase warm clothes for children who need them. Preschoolers loved the buttery popcorn and their quick visit to Kindergarten!

Our Pennies for Penguins challenge is in full swing! Yesterday, Preschoolers had a chance to walk down to the Commons and place their coins in the collection tower. Today we received our own classroom container which we decorated with penguins and a picture of each Preschooler. Money will be collected until the end of March.

Children were inspired by the fuse beads that have been open at the Art table. Instead of just using fuse beads, which melt into delicate designs, two friends wanted to bring back stringing beads so they could make bracelets and necklaces for their family members. It is always important for Preschooler's ideas to be incorporated into the day. The fun and learning never ends!

Two full weeks of Take Apart have passed and friends are still excited, energized and looking forward to more fun! We are keeping track of each piece we find inside our broken machines and recording it on our classroom whiteboard. After spring break, we will have a final week of Take Apart and then we will work on creating new structures with the broken pieces!

Preschoolers love visiting with their 3rd grade Buddies. After reading library books together, the children play in the classroom. These buddies decided to spend some time building with legos. In the next few months, 3rd graders will write fairy tales and share them with our class! Enjoy your Spring Break and we will see you at the end of March!

Welcome back! After two weeks of vacation, children and teachers were happy to be together again to learn and play. During table toy time, groups of two or three children chose toys to build, count and organize in many different ways. These two friends worked together to create a farm for their animals to live in.

Children continued to work together while in gym class. One game they collaborated on was an Olympic ring toss relay. Groups of children formed lines behind an orange cone. The child at the start of the line would carry the ring to the next line of children and pass it to the person in front. This game continued until everyone had a chance to collect, carry and pass the ring.

In today's IDEA lab class, we explored the outdoors! Now that it is Spring, Preschoolers were tasked with finding changes in the grass, soil and their surroundings. Children pointed out birds they heard chirping, fallen tree branches, plants sprouting and even the warmer feel of the sun.

Preschoolers who stay for a full day, have a new way to spend rest time. If they choose, children can look at books while they take a break after a busy school day. Children can still fall asleep if they would like to, but those who stay awake, can have quiet time looking at books. After rest, we read a book together.

Take a part has ended and "put together" has begun! Now that Preschoolers have taken apart over 10 machines, they can now use the pieces to create new structures. This pair of friends wanted to recreate the old pencil sharpener and radio, but then decided to create alien ships and boats instead.

While spending time in the IDEA Lab, each child had a chance to explore a variety of bird feathers. Some feathers were small, thin and grey, while others were large with beautiful, bright colors. Each child had their own set of feathers and were tasked with finding the specific feather their teacher was giving clues about.

Preschool hosted Young Kindergarten friends for a free play time today! After visiting the IDEA Lab, our friends came to the classroom to explore and spend more time with us. We spend every day together in gym and music class, but since some children will be classmates next year, it is the perfect time to get to know each other better.

Preschoolers are beginning to learn about roots! As the air starts to warm up and the sun shines brighter, we will plant seeds. Until then, we have started to learn about the parts of a plant. A teacher in Middle School knew we were studying roots, so she pulled some from her garden and brought them in for us to explore!

It's parachute time! Preschoolers have eagerly awaited the appearance of the colorful parachute we use on Field Day. At the end of today's gym class, each child had a chance to hold the parachute and learn how to make small and big waves. As Field Day approaches, children will have more time to learn and practice the fun games we will play.

We spent a portion of our time in the IDEA Lab exploring nests! After taking a "signs of Spring" walk around the playground a few weeks back, our Science teacher decided to bring in nests she had found or been given. Preschool children looked at each nest and generated a list of materials that birds used to make their homes. Children then took a trip outside to place cotton, ribbons, twine and other materials in the courtyard for birds to find and use to create more nests.

Now that we all know our Lively Letter sounds, we used an iPad game to make words! Using the application Montessori Crosswords, each child had a chance to make a CVC word. In the game, a three letter word and picture is shown and children must pull the letter from the bottom of the screen, into the corresponding letter/sound box. Everyone loved the game and we will continue using it and other fun experiences to keep making words!

Preschoolers have been practicing counting with one to one correspondence to twenty! We have used velcro fish, counting cards, sand paper numbers and today we used unifix cubes. Each friend had a chance to find their numeral, put it in order in a number line and then count and stack that number of cubes. They are learning so much each day!

Table drawing happens every Wednesday. Each child is working hard to build a portfolio of all of their drawings and stories. After they draw for a quiet period of time, their teacher writes words to describe their picture, then each child date stamps their work and places it in their folder. This portfolio is something families will treasure for years to come.

In the Winter, Preschoolers spent time identifying shapes and their attributes during math time. This information came in handy during today's IDEA lab class. Each child was given a set of shapes to identify while sitting on the rug. They were asked to find the shape that most resembled a nest. They were then led outside and asked to find materials that could be used to make a nest. Lots of twigs, sticks and leaves were gathered.

Preschoolers worked hard during their partner play learning time. Each table was arranged so that two friends at a time could practice sorting tiles by color, tracing and writing letters, matching and identifying letters, creating patterns and everyone's favorite, drawing with shaving cream! After 7 minutes, each pair switched to a new table.

On Mondays, Preschool friends love to bring in different possessions that are meaningful to them. Children brought in head bands, a dolphin, connected boxes that could be moved and a new bracelet. This friend shared his trip to Washington, D.C. and information about the monuments he visited.

After spending time spelling words on the iPad, children explored letter sounds in a different way. Everyone was given three letter bean bags which had a letter on the outside and many objects that began with that letter, inside. Preschoolers explored their letters and told the group which objects they discovered inside.

Preschool painters were excited to find a new type of paint brush at the easel. Instead of the long, thin bristle brushes, two friends could paint or blot with round, foam brushes. Children noticed the different ways they could paint and how the paint landed on the paper just by switching to something new!

Preschoolers began tracking the weather today! Each school day this month, the leader will decide if it is a cloudy, sunny, partly cloudy or rainy day. They will then check a weather website to find the temperature and record it on the calendar. At the end of the month, we will observe and discuss any weather patterns we find.

We have just a few weeks left to add to our table drawing portfolio! Each Wednesday since September, children have written their names, drawn a meaningful picture and had a teacher (or themselves!) write words to describe their pictures. In just one month, the folders will be complete and sent home for families to enjoy.

Felt dolls are always fun to play with! During arrival and throughout the day, small groups of friends like to choose dolls, furniture and clothes and set them up in scenes on felt boards. Children this year love to put on productions, so this is another way for them to be creative directors!

For today's share, Preschoolers brought in stuffed animals (which they like to rest with in the afternoon), rocks, necklaces and told stories about what they did over the weekend. This Preschool friend visited New York recently and brought in a picture to show her classmates what she did while there.

"Green Pink" made her debut at the Gordon School! After raising the most money of any school in RI, Mystic Aquarium and one of their African penguins visited today. The two presenters taught us a lot about penguins, including how they get their names, how we know whether or not they are a boy or girl and even the sound they make as they search for a mate. Ask your Preschooler what they learned.

After visiting the library, Preschoolers can't wait to return to the classroom and look at their library books. Later in the day they will read their books with their 3rd grade Buddies. Please return any library books you have at home. As we approach the end of the school year, all books will need to be re-shelved.

In early April, Preschoolers began studying roots. After reading books about roots and the other parts of a plant, we decided to watch roots grow through our Root Vue Farm. We planted radish, carrot and onion seeds and spent weeks observing them grow (or not grow at all)! Early this morning, with the help of a Nursery teacher (who is an expert on planting!), we finally planted our radish and carrot sprouts in the outdoor garden.

Preschoolers engaged in a little science experiment. Each child counted out six water marbles and filled a cup with warm water. As the day continues, children can observe the changes that happen to their marbles. Friends have already commented that their once smooth, compact marbles, now look fuzzy and see through. At the end of the day, children can take their marbles home to watch them grow and shrink.

Last week, Preschoolers had a chance to explore water marbles and see how they expand over time as warm water is added to them. This morning, we put lots of water marbles in the sensory table and filled both sides with warm water. These water marbles will live in the classroom and have more fun things added to them throughout the week.

Today was a scootering and building day in gym! Children were on teams of two and began at a colored hula hoop. One teammate at a time scootered on their belly's over to a container of Legos. Once reaching the Legos, the children could grab a handful of Legos and build! They scootered over to their partners, who then repeated the process!

Today we had our last IDEA Lab class of the year. We spent the time outside looking for bugs. Armed with our "bug bags", which held a bug box, magnifying glass and wooden hoop, we searched the courtyard and near the pond. We didn't find many bugs, but we spotted strawberries, lots of leaves and trees.
